Formula 1 Celebrates 75 Years Since First World Championship Race

Formula 1 Celebrates 75 Years: Historic 1950 Grand Prix Footage Brought to Life in Color

Seventy-five years ago, on May 13, 1950, a group of roaring engines broke the silence at Silverstone Circuit, marking the birth of what would become one of the most iconic sporting series in the world — the Formula 1 World Championship. Now, to commemorate this landmark anniversary, Formula 1 has released colorised and digitally restored footage of that very first Grand Prix, offering fans a vivid glimpse into the sport’s origins.

The inaugural race, part of a seven-race championship that year, was won by Italy’s Giuseppe “Nino” Farina driving an Alfa Romeo — a victory that not only crowned the first World Drivers’ Champion but also laid the foundation for the global phenomenon Formula 1 would become.

To breathe new life into this historical moment, Formula 1’s archival team undertook a painstaking restoration process. Using state-of-the-art AI tools, historical reference photography, and manual digital painting techniques, they transformed black-and-white reels into vibrant color. From the metallic sheen of the Alfa Romeos to the lush British grass and 1950s-era fashion in the stands, each frame has been carefully reconstructed for historical accuracy and emotional impact.

“The goal wasn’t just to add color — it was to transport viewers back in time,” one F1 historian commented. “It’s a rare opportunity to experience the atmosphere of that era in a way that resonates with the visual expectations of today’s audience.”

The footage release is part of a full day of celebratory content across Formula 1 platforms. Fans can tune in to a 24-hour YouTube stream featuring seven full classic races, iconic highlights spanning seven decades, and current drivers and team principals reflecting on their personal introductions to the sport.

Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali reflected on the occasion with a nod to the sport’s legacy:

“Seventy-five years ago today, our sport roared to life, and we are privileged to continue the incredible legacy of the brave drivers who raced for the ultimate prize on this day in 1950. It is fantastic to see this footage brought to life in full colour, and an amazing way to mark this historic moment.”

“Today is a day to honour those who came before us — drivers, engineers, team owners, and of course, our fans, without whom none of this would be possible. For 75 years, Formula 1 has pushed the boundaries of innovation, passion, and speed. Here’s to the next 75.” Avanti Tutta

Under the slogan Avanti Tutta — which translates from Italian as “full speed ahead” — Formula 1 is not only celebrating a rich and storied past, but also looking firmly toward the future, driven by innovation and ambition.

As the sport celebrates its storied past, it also accelerates toward a high-tech, sustainable, and globally connected future. But thanks to this newly released footage, fans can now revisit where it all began — in living color.
