Volvo and Google Deepen Collaboration with Gemini AI and Advanced Android Integration

Volvo Cars and Google have taken their long-standing partnership to the next level, announcing an expanded collaboration aimed at accelerating the rollout of cutting-edge in-car technologies. At Google I/O 2025, the two companies showcased their joint development of Google Gemini™—the latest in conversational AI—within the all-electric Volvo EX90, offering a glimpse of the future for Volvo drivers around the globe.

Reimagining the Connected Car Experience

With this new phase of collaboration, Volvo models featuring Google built-in will be among the first in the industry to integrate Google Gemini. This advanced AI assistant is designed to engage in natural conversation, allowing drivers to seamlessly send messages, translate texts, query the owner’s manual, or get detailed information about their route—all while keeping their focus on the road.

Replacing the current Google Assistant, Gemini aims to reduce driver distraction by making voice interaction smarter and more intuitive. The AI can better interpret natural language, offering a smoother, more human-like experience that supports Volvo’s broader mission of human-centric innovation.

Volvo Becomes a Lead Platform for Android Automotive Development

In a significant move, Volvo Cars will also now serve as one of Google’s reference hardware platforms for automotive development. This means future versions of Android for cars will be tested and refined on Volvo vehicles before being rolled out more broadly. The result: Volvo owners will get early access to the newest Android features, performance upgrades, and connected services.

“For years, Google and Volvo Cars have collaborated closely to bring cutting-edge technology to connected cars,” said Patrick Brady, Vice President of Android for Cars at Google. “We’re excited to deepen this partnership, accelerating the pace of innovation that will not only improve the driving experience for Volvo customers but also set new benchmarks for the automotive industry.”

Innovation That Puts People First

Volvo continues to lead with a focus on user experience and thoughtful design. “We strive to deliver human-centric technology, and a stunning customer experience is an essential part of this,” said Alwin Bakkenes, Volvo’s Head of Global Software Engineering. “Through our expanding partnership with Google, we’re collaborating on cutting-edge solutions that shape the future of connected cars.”

By combining Google’s software expertise with Volvo’s legacy of safety and innovation, the companies are redefining what it means to drive a smart car. This latest chapter ensures that Volvo remains at the forefront of the digital driving revolution—offering technology that’s not only advanced but designed with people in mind.
