Mercedes working hard to catch up with McLaren

Mercedes has largely remained under the radar during pre-season testing, while McLaren and Ferrari have attracted most of the media attention. Ahead of the first race in Bahrain, the Woking and Maranello teams were considered the favorites. However, after the first two races, Mercedes has surpassed all expectations with its 2025 package.

The new W16 car is much more predictable than its predecessor, both in terms of handling and in its resistance to changes in wind levels and track temperature – which previously had disastrous consequences for performance. George Russell currently sits third in the championship, having taken two consecutive podiums, regularly giving McLaren cause for concern.

Looking ahead, Mercedes is cautiously optimistic that they can give Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris headaches.

Mercedes optimistic in fight for top spot

Unlike previous years, the development battle in 2025 could be decided in the first months of the season. Teams are already shifting resources to the 2026 regulations, which leaves very little room for improvement this season.

That’s why Mercedes has put itself in a very strong position with its basic W16 car package. The Brackley team can avoid the problems faced by Ferrari and Red Bull. Since returning to Mercedes, technical director James Allison has addressed many of the team’s previous weaknesses.

The W16 is another step in the right direction, which instills confidence that more time can be found on the track.

Speaking after the Chinese Grand Prix, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was optimistic about the title fight.
“Today they had maybe a two-tenths advantage over us,” Wolff told Sky F1 Germany.

“Considering that our car didn’t work at all on Friday, this was a good step forward. Two or even three tenths can be made up,” added Wolff.

“In Melbourne, the difference was too big.”

Antonelli completes strong driver line-up

Mercedes’ key advantage this year is its extremely strong driver line-up. Unlike Red Bull, which is pinning all its hopes on Max Verstappen, both drivers of the Silver Arrows are achieving results.

George Russell can rely on getting the most out of his car, while Kimi Antonelli is already fast enough to challenge his teammate. His sixth place in China, after Ferrari’s disqualification, is better than it looks on paper.

The 18-year-old suffered damage to the floor of his car early in the race, which limited his speed. Despite this, the Italian brought important points to the team that should not be written off.

The Silver Arrows boss is pleased with the young driver’s development because he is confident in his potential, and he is proving it.

“Kimi’s race was unfortunately compromised by the floor damage he sustained on the first lap.”

“However, he remained focused and fought despite the big loss in performance, finishing in a solid eighth position.”

“He didn’t complain, he just did his job, and that’s what we want to see,” he noted.

Mercedes is pleased with the start of the new season. Although the ambition remains to win, they are aware that they have no right to feel superior.

“Currently our car is not as fast as the McLaren, but the team is working hard to reduce that gap,” the Austrian points out.

“For now we are maximizing what we have and leaving China second in the constructors’ championship. With two podiums in the first two races, we can be satisfied.”
