Apple CarPlay Gets a Major Upgrade with iOS 26

A redesigned interface, smarter features, and deeper integration make CarPlay better than ever.

Apple is gearing up to release iOS 26 this fall, and with it comes a significant evolution for CarPlay — the in-car system that brings the power of iPhone to your vehicle’s dashboard. Already used over 600 million times per day, CarPlay is now getting an even more intuitive, beautiful, and connected experience.

Sleek New Look with Liquid Glass Design

One of the most noticeable changes is the updated interface. CarPlay adopts Apple’s new Liquid Glass design, which includes more modern visuals, refined app borders, and elegant translucent effects. This new aesthetic matches the iOS 26 look and makes the in-car experience feel even more polished.

Smarter Calls with Compact View

Answering calls while driving just got more seamless. iOS 26 introduces a compact call interface in CarPlay, showing who’s calling without taking over the whole screen. This means you can stay on a call without losing sight of your navigation or other active apps.

Messages Get a Boost: Tapbacks and Pinned Chats

Messaging in CarPlay is also getting smarter. With iOS 26, users can now react to messages using Tapbacks and easily access important conversations by pinning them to the top of the Messages app. It’s never been easier to stay in touch while keeping your focus on the road.

Widgets and Live Activities for Everyone

Previously reserved for CarPlay Ultra, interactive widgets are now available to all CarPlay users. From calendar updates to smart home controls, your most-used info is now just a tap away. Live Activities also make their debut across the system, providing real-time updates — like flight tracking — directly alongside your driving directions.

CarPlay Ultra: A Fully Integrated Experience

Apple is also expanding CarPlay Ultra — a premium version of CarPlay offering deep integration with vehicle systems. Drivers of select models, like Aston Martin, can enjoy a unified interface across multiple screens, including the instrument cluster and climate controls. Automakers like Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and Volvo are expected to bring CarPlay Ultra support to more vehicles soon.

With iOS 26, Apple takes the CarPlay experience to the next level. From a modern design and smarter communication tools to expanded functionality and full-car integration through CarPlay Ultra, drivers can look forward to a safer, more connected, and visually stunning journey.

Stay tuned for the official iOS 26 rollout this fall.
