BMW Group Reaches Milestone: Three-Millionth Electrified Vehicle Produced in Munich
May 27, 2025 — Munich
BMW Group marked a major milestone today as the three-millionth electrified vehicle rolled off its main assembly line in Munich. The landmark car — a BMW 330e Touring in striking Portimao Blue — is headed for the UK market. This production achievement underscores BMW’s growing commitment to electric mobility and its ability to adapt swiftly to evolving market demands.

In 2024 alone, every fourth vehicle sold by the Group was either fully electric or a plug-in hybrid. BMW’s ability to manufacture both electrified and conventional vehicles on the same production lines has given it unique flexibility and production efficiency.
“All plants in our global production network are enabled for electromobility, paving the way for continued growth in this segment,” said Milan Nedeljković, BMW AG Board Member for Production.

From BMW i3 to Global Electrification
BMW’s journey into electric mobility began in 2013 with the launch of the BMW i3 at its Leipzig plant. Produced in a dedicated space due to its unique architecture, the i3 was the Group’s first series-produced BEV. Alongside it, the innovative plug-in hybrid BMW i8 also helped lay the foundation for BMW’s electrified future.
Over the last decade, BMW has steadily integrated EVs into its global production strategy. Initially, plug-in hybrids were assembled on shared lines with combustion-engine vehicles. Today, many BMW Group plants are capable of producing fully electric and hybrid models side by side, reflecting a seamless transition across its production ecosystem.
Electrification Across the Globe
BMW’s electrification strategy extends worldwide. The MINI Cooper SE was introduced in Oxford in 2019, followed by expansion across China, the U.S., Mexico, South Africa, and more. In Germany, all production plants now manufacture fully electric vehicles, including the iX and i4 models in Munich and Dingolfing.
Plants in Brazil, India, and Thailand are also contributing to BMW’s global electrified output. Future developments include BEV production in Spartanburg (U.S.) from 2026 and in San Luis Potosí (Mexico) from 2027 as part of the Neue Klasse rollout.
E-Drive Innovation Hub
At the heart of this transition lies BMW’s Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing, operational since the early days of the i3. By 2022, the facility had scaled to produce over 500,000 electric drive units annually. Now, fifth-generation battery and e-drive production has expanded to Regensburg, Leipzig, and Spartanburg.
BMW is also preparing for the sixth generation of e-drives, which will debut with the Neue Klasse series at the brand-new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, later this year.
This three-millionth electrified vehicle represents more than a numerical milestone — it is a testament to BMW Group’s forward-looking approach to mobility, production agility, and global readiness for an electric future.
