Max decides whether Russell will join Aston Martin

Herbert explains why George Russell’s future depends on the decision of four-time champion Max Verstappen

There has been a lot of talk lately about the future of Max Verstappen. Since Christian Horner was dismissed by Red Bull, the rumors have not stopped. On the other hand, George Russell is also waiting for his opportunity. Former F1 driver and race steward Johnny Herbert believes that Russell’s future depends on Verstappen’s decision.

Herbert has previously warned Mercedes about the risks of bringing Verstappen into the team, outlining possible scenarios following Horner’s departure—scenarios closely tied to George Russell’s future.

Russell to Aston Martin ‘still a possibility’

In an interview with Escapist Magazine, Herbert stated that there’s a possibility the current Mercedes driver could end up at the Silverstone-based team. However, Verstappen’s influence might also play a role in Russell remaining with the German outfit—or potentially moving to Alpine, which will be powered by Mercedes engines next year.

“The possibility of George Russell moving to Aston Martin is still there. I think there’s definitely an opportunity. Alpine is the only other option where a place might be available,” said Herbert.

“You don’t want to take a year off, because that’s usually the worst thing you can do. Things move so fast in Formula 1, and it’s easy to get passed over—even if you’re George Russell.”

Herbert believes Aston Martin could be the right fit for Russell:

“I hope common sense prevails and George is the one Aston Martin chooses—whether or not they sign Max. If Aston Martin brings in Max, George is their best long-term option in partnership with Mercedes,” he added.

Verstappen at Red Bull not a sure thing?

Since Christian Horner’s departure as Red Bull’s CEO and team principal, there have been many differing opinions about Verstappen’s future at the team. Staying at Red Bull is still not a certainty—even after Horner’s exit.
