Nissan Reveals the Next-Gen LEAF: A Bold Step Into the Future of EVs

A New Era for Electric Mobility: Third-Generation Nissan LEAF Unveiled

June 4, 2025 – Yokohama, Japan
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has launched a new short video series spotlighting the minds behind the all-new, third-generation Nissan LEAF. This next-generation electric vehicle (EV) represents a significant evolution in Nissan’s EV journey, which began with the pioneering LEAF back in 2010.

With nearly 700,000 LEAF units sold worldwide and over 28 billion kilometers traveled by its drivers, Nissan has drawn from over a decade of real-world data and feedback to reimagine the LEAF for today’s EV landscape. The result is a cutting-edge vehicle that blends emotion-driven design with practical engineering, aiming to be a true alternative to combustion-powered cars.

Designed with Purpose – and Precision

The latest LEAF is more than just a new model—it’s a symbol of Nissan’s commitment to pushing boundaries. Referred to as one of the brand’s “heartbeat models,” it embodies Nissan’s bold philosophy: to do what others don’t dare.

“We wanted this generation of the LEAF to resonate with more than just early EV adopters. It had to be emotionally compelling and rationally practical,” said Richard Candler, Vice President of Global Product Strategy. “It’s designed to look sharp and modern, while providing the functionality families need every day.”

Aerodynamics Take Center Stage

Engineered with aerodynamic performance at its core, the new LEAF features an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.26 for U.S. and Japanese models—and an even sleeker 0.25 for European variants. These values are achieved through thoughtful design elements such as flush door handles, an active grille shutter, flat underbody, and a fastback-inspired silhouette that enhances airflow.

Europe-specific models further benefit from unique wheels and mirror designs that improve aerodynamic efficiency.

Program Design Director Nobutaka Tase emphasized the level of detail that went into each element. “Even the panoramic glass roof was shaped with aerodynamics in mind. It allowed us to lower critical height points by 12 mm without compromising interior space, thanks to its advanced dimming technology.”

Smart Comfort with Innovative Tech

The new LEAF’s panoramic roof is more than just aesthetic—it uses electrochromic glass with heat shielding to eliminate the need for traditional sunshades. Drivers can adjust the transparency with the press of a button, helping maintain a cool, comfortable cabin without sacrificing headroom.

A special infrared-reflective coating adds another layer of comfort by minimizing heat from direct sunlight, offering year-round usability and a cleaner interior design.

Spacious Interior, Modern Platform

Built on Nissan’s CMF-EV platform, the LEAF’s cabin offers a flat floor and open layout that enhances space and comfort for passengers. It’s a testament to the balance Nissan has achieved between cutting-edge styling and family-friendly practicality.

As anticipation builds ahead of the global launch later this month, this video series offers a rare behind-the-scenes look into the design and innovation that brought the third-generation LEAF to life.
