Russell and Antonelli Address Mercedes Future Amid Verstappen Speculation

As the Formula 1 paddock gathers at Spa for the Belgian Grand Prix, Mercedes duo George Russell and Kimi Antonelli have spoken out about their contract situations for 2026—amid ongoing rumors linking Max Verstappen to the Silver Arrows.

George Russell, who has been at the center of recent speculation regarding a possible seat reshuffle at Mercedes, remained calm and confident when addressing questions about his future. Despite mounting reports of Mercedes holding talks with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, Russell made it clear that his focus remains firmly on performance rather than politics.

“It’s not something that’s affecting me at all,” said Russell during Thursday’s media day. “I’m just focused on delivering on track. Of course, we’re having discussions in the background, but there’s nothing concrete to announce right now.”

The Brit has delivered an impressive campaign so far in 2025, highlighted by five podium finishes and a commanding win in Montreal. While his current contract situation hasn’t been formally resolved, Russell emphasized he has no interest in exploring opportunities elsewhere, expressing his desire to continue with Mercedes into a fifth consecutive season.

“I’m not actively looking at other options,” he added. “I’m performing well, leading the team in points, and I believe the team values what I bring. There’s a lot being said in the media, but I’m confident everything will work out. Honestly, I think others are more concerned about my future than I am.”

Meanwhile, Russell’s teammate and F1 rookie Kimi Antonelli also weighed in on his status for 2026. The 18-year-old Italian, who has shown promising progress in his debut season—including a maiden podium in Canada—has yet to be officially confirmed for next year. Still, Antonelli appeared relaxed and optimistic.

“The big question, right?” Antonelli said with a smile when asked about his future. “I’ve never been worried. I know the direction the team wants to take. Toto [Wolff] has been transparent with me, and the atmosphere in the team is really positive. George and I work well together, and there’s a strong push from everyone at the factory.”

Mercedes has invested heavily in Antonelli’s development through the junior ranks, and while no formal extension has been announced, the consensus within the paddock suggests he is likely to stay on for a second season.

As for Verstappen, the reigning World Champion’s name continues to hover over the Mercedes driver market, though recent whispers suggest interest from both sides may be cooling. No statements were made by Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff this week, leaving the future driver lineup still shrouded in uncertainty.

For now, both Russell and Antonelli appear unshaken by the rumors and committed to their roles within the team, focusing on continuing Mercedes’ upward trajectory as the championship battle continues.
