Russell : “I Haven’t Hit My Peak Yet”

George Russell Sends a Warning Shot: “I Haven’t Hit My Peak Yet”

Mercedes driver George Russell is turning heads early in the 2025 Formula 1 season—not just with his performances on the track, but with the confidence he’s exuding off it.

With three podium finishes in the first five races, including a standout performance in Bahrain where he fended off McLaren’s Lando Norris to claim second place, Russell has shown that he’s a serious contender. Despite a slightly less successful outing in Saudi Arabia, where he slipped from third to fifth, the Brit is sitting just 26 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri.

But according to Russell, we haven’t seen the best of him yet.

“I feel like I’m finally coming into my own,” he said. “I don’t believe I’ve made huge leaps compared to last year, but I’ve been consistently improving—especially since Austin. I was teammates with a seven-time world champion, so naturally, there’s always internal pressure. Maybe I wasn’t always honest with myself back then. But now, I feel like I’m driving the best I ever have. There’s still room to grow, and that’s what really motivates me.”

This season marks a turning point for Russell. With Lewis Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari, the 27-year-old has stepped into the lead role at Mercedes, guiding the team alongside rising star Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Many in the paddock see this as the year Russell steps up not just as a fast driver, but as a true leader.

Even though the W16 hasn’t matched the outright pace of the Red Bulls or McLarens so far, Russell’s consistency has kept him firmly in the title fight. His performances have sparked talk across the F1 world that he’s taken a significant step forward—both in speed and in mindset.

Still, Russell remains grounded. He’s not buying into the hype just yet.

“People are saying I’ve made a big leap, but I think there’s still a long way to go. That’s the exciting part. I know what I’m capable of, and I’m only just getting started.”

With a focused mindset, solid form, and a leadership role cemented at Mercedes, George Russell might be on the brink of his biggest season yet.
