Subaru Announces New WRX Prototype

Subaru has released a teaser image that appears to be an announcement of the next generation WRX.
The prototype is set to debut at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show in October, and the company also confirms it is preparing a new boxer engine.

Tetsuo Fujinuki, Subaru’s chief technology officer, spoke briefly about the new model, though he avoided mentioning the name. What he did say is that it will be equipped with an evolved version of the four-wheel drive system currently used in the Super Taikyu racing series.

According to a report by Japanese magazine Car Watch, Fujinuki described the vehicle as an “attractive car”, adding that there are plans for an even more attractive version in the future, with the promise that further details will be revealed at the said show.

According to Carscoops, although it hasn’t been confirmed, all indications are that this could be the long-awaited upgrade to the WRX, possibly even in an STI version.

The teaser image doesn’t reveal much, but it does show a car with aggressive aerodynamics. The front looks like an evolution of the design of the current WRX, with a large grille, pronounced splitter and a hood with an air vent.

In addition to the new model, Fujinuki confirmed the development of the next generation boxer engine. Although details are still limited, the engine will be compatible with carbon-neutral E20 fuel, with a strong hint of hybrid assistance being included. No word yet on displacement or cylinder count.

Speaking to Best Car Web, Fujinuki emphasized Subaru’s continued commitment to customers who choose the brand. “We appreciate the customers who choose Subaru,” he said. “We will continue to build cars that will help them do that.”

More answers should emerge when the 2025 Japan Mobility Show begins on October 30.
