The new Mercedes CLA will be officially unveiled on March 13th

The third-generation Mercedes CLA will debut next month (March 13), as the first model built on Mercedes' new Modular Architecture platform, designed specifically for compact vehicles in the entry-level luxury segment.
Customers will have the option of choosing a hybrid variant or an all-electric version. Both powertrains will retain the same visual identity, with differences limited to details such as the grille and the presence or absence of tailpipes.

Hybrid models will have a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, with front-wheel drive as standard and four-wheel drive as an option.  Electric variants promise advanced technology, including an 800-volt system, energy-efficient motors and a two-speed transmission.  Unlike hybrids, electric versions will have rear-wheel drive as standard.

The new CLA was presented as a concept version in 2023, while the production model will arrive in showrooms later this year.  Also, in addition to the sedan, there should also be a Shooting Brake version in the offer.

However, the production model’s exterior is expected to largely retain the concept’s appearance with a fluid, aerodynamic silhouette.

As for the interior, the new CLA is said to combine minimalist elegance imbued with technology with practical functionality.  While the production model will feature a significantly toned-down version of the concept’s interior, it still boasts a futuristic cabin aesthetic.  Key features include the MBUX infotainment system, which integrates a full-width display located above the center console.

The vehicle’s longer wheelbase will improve rear-seat comfort, and a full suite of driver assistance features is expected.

The third generation CLA will also have a new level 2++ autonomous system for city driving.  Building on the Mercedes-Benz Drive Pilot, it uses sensors and artificial intelligence, although driver supervision is still required.  It is expected to be an option on all future models using the MMA platform.

In addition, the CLA will support Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functions which will further increase its versatility and integration into the electric ecosystem.

Apart from the standard models, Mercedes-Benz is already testing a sporty AMG variant, which is expected to be an electric model.  This high-performance version should get electric motors with around 500 hp.

Compared to the standard electric CLA model, the AMG variant will have upgraded electric motors, an advanced battery cooling system, a more aggressive aero body kit and a tweaked interior with sports seats and steering wheel.

40 novelties announced

Mercedes announces that it will release almost 40 new or significantly revised models in the next few years.  The brand is by no means turning its back on electric vehicles, the 17 new models it will launch by 2027 will be EVs.  But 19 new cars will have SUS engines and live into the 2030s.

The company will also soon introduce a facelifted S-Class and says four- to eight-cylinder engines will be available across Mercedes’ range, equipped to meet Euro 7 emissions standards.  And it also remains committed to the powerful V12 engine for its flagship models.

Unification of design language between SUS cars and electric vehicles

Finally, Mercedes also plans to unify the design language between its SUS-powered cars and electric vehicles.  This means future three-pointed star models will adopt a “coherent design language” across the portfolio.

Mercedes promises that there will be no compromises resulting from this new approach: “BEV and electrified high-tech SUS models will take advantage of their strengths, without sacrificing space, elegance, convenience or efficiency.”
