Volkswagen of America Commemorates Third Annual International Volkswagen Bus Day with Restoration of Iconic California Wildfire Survivor T2
June 2, 2025
Volkswagen of America marks this year’s International Volkswagen Bus Day by announcing a heartfelt restoration project for a very special vehicle — a 1977 Volkswagen Type 2 (T2) that survived the devastating Palisades Fire in Southern California earlier this year.
Known affectionately as the “magic bus,” this white-and-blue T2 captured the public’s imagination after stunning photos emerged showing it seemingly untouched amid a Malibu neighborhood ravaged by the January 2025 wildfire. Despite its remarkably preserved appearance, Volkswagen’s engineering team knew the bus required a thorough evaluation and possible repairs.
Volkswagen of America reached out to the owner, Megan Krystle Weinraub, who lovingly calls her bus “Azul.” She welcomed the offer to assess and potentially restore the vehicle to its pre-fire condition. “Receiving Volkswagen’s support was incredibly reassuring,” Weinraub shared. “Azul has become a symbol of resilience and hope for many, and I’m grateful to see her getting the care she deserves.”
Following careful coordination to access the fire-damaged area, Azul was transported to Volkswagen’s Oxnard Engineering Campus, located roughly 35 miles northwest of Malibu. This facility, home to Volkswagen’s historic vehicle collection and restoration efforts, is the perfect place for such a delicate project.

Upon inspection, technicians discovered that although one side of the bus looked nearly flawless, extensive mechanical repairs and bodywork were necessary to restore full roadworthiness. Restoration work has commenced and is expected to be completed later this year.
This restoration initiative is part of Volkswagen’s ongoing commitment to support the California communities affected by wildfires. Earlier this year, Volkswagen donated to the California Fire Foundation to aid first responders and their families during recovery efforts.
“California and the Volkswagen Bus share a unique bond,” said Rachael Zaluzec, SVP of Marketing & Customer Experience for Volkswagen Group of America. “Bringing Azul back to the road not only celebrates this heritage but also inspires hope and joy for generations to come.”
Since its inception, International Volkswagen Bus Day, celebrated annually on June 2, honors the legacy of the classic VW Bus—from the original T1 through to the modern ID. Buzz—uniting fans across the globe.
