Volvo Cars is preparing to expand its electrified lineup with the debut of the new Volvo XC70, a mid-size SUV that marks the company’s first foray into extended-range plug-in hybrid vehicles. With an impressive all-electric driving range of up to 200 kilometers*, the XC70 sets a new benchmark for Volvo’s hybrid technology.
Engineered on Volvo’s brand-new SMA platform, which is designed specifically for premium extended-range plug-in hybrids, the XC70 plays a strategic role in Volvo’s ongoing electrification journey. It is initially being launched for the Chinese market, where demand for long-range hybrids is on the rise. Volvo has indicated it is considering other global markets in the future.
“This model bridges the gap between traditional hybrids and fully electric vehicles,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. “It gives us the flexibility to meet customer needs in regions that aren’t yet ready for a full transition to EVs, while still pushing our sustainability goals forward.”
The XC70 blends daily electric commuting with the freedom of an efficient combustion engine for longer trips. Quick charging and a low-emission footprint offer a cost-effective and environmentally conscious solution for a wide range of drivers.

From a design standpoint, the XC70 carries the essence of Scandinavian minimalism with a modern twist. It sports a clean silhouette, defined shoulder lines, and a sloping roofline that contributes to its robust yet elegant stance. At the front, the SUV features a shield-like closed grille inspired by Volvo’s electric models, complete with an adaptive shutter to optimize airflow and cabin comfort—enhancing energy efficiency and range.
The iconic “Thor’s Hammer” daytime running lights have been reimagined, flanked by advanced Matrix LED headlights that adjust to traffic and road conditions for enhanced safety and visibility. The rear design is equally refined, with vertical C-shaped taillights integrated directly into the glass for a sleek, modern finish.
The XC70 nameplate will be familiar to longtime Volvo fans—it originally debuted as a rugged offshoot of the V70 wagon. This new iteration builds on that legacy, evolving into a more spacious and capable SUV format that sits just above the XC60 in size.
As anticipation builds, Volvo promises to share more technical specs and details in the months ahead. For now, the XC70 represents a strong signal of where the company is headed: toward a flexible, electrified future that adapts to different market needs without compromising design or performance.
